The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) —  administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) — is a global level entrance test that is an admission requirement of thousands of graduate schools. Prospective applicants who are interested in pursuing a masters degree in any field or a PhD appear for this test. If you are one of those applicants, you must be wondering what the GRE exam fee could be.

So, how much does it cost to appear for the GRE exam? Read on to find out.

GRE Exam Fees

The GRE offers tests in two formats— General Test and Subject Test. The general test is structured in a way to measure your general skills such as Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, while the subject test measures your knowledge of subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Psychology. The GRE General Test registration fee varies from country to country. In most countries, the GRE fee is USD 205, while in some places, like India, it is USD 213 (approximately 15700 INR). While the GRE general test fees vary based on your location, GRE subject test fees are consistent all over the world — USD 150 (11200 INR approx.)

In addition to the registration fee, you may have to pay additional costs associated with GRE such as rescheduling fee, additional score reports fee, etc., among others. Let’s take a look at those.

GRE Special Handling Charges

Sometimes, due to some unforeseen circumstances, you might not be able to appear for the GRE exam. In such situations, you can reschedule the exam for some extra cost. ETS charges USD 50 (Approx. 3700 INR) to reschedule and select a new date for the examination. You can reschedule the exam either by visiting the official website of ETS or by connecting with a representative of the Regional Registration Centre. More so, if you want to request a change in the test center, you need to pay the same amount, i.e, USD 50.

In addition to the aforementioned GRE exam fees in India, below are the extra costs for scoring services.

However, to receive the refund, you have to cancel your registration at least four days before the examination. The refund amount will be credited to your bank account, from which you’ve paid the exam fee.

The GRE fees vary depending on your location and the test type. Hence, we suggest you consider the above information before starting the application process. Additionally, if you have any doubts regarding the fees or payment guidelines, visit the ETS official website, clear your doubts and fill in the application! Good luck.
