The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) —  administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) — is a global level entrance test that is an admission requirement of thousands of graduate schools. Prospective applicants who are interested in pursuing a masters degree in any field or a PhD appear for this test. If you are one of those applicants, you have to first register for the GRE and pay a GRE entrance exam fee. So, how much does it cost to appear for the GRE exam ? GRE Exam Fees 

The GRE offers tests in two formats — General Test and Subject Test. The general test is structured in a way to measure your critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical writing and logical reasoning skills through three sections — Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, while the subject test measures your knowledge of subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Psychology. 

The GRE General Test registration fee varies from country to country. In most countries, the GRE application fee is USD 205, while the GRE fee in India is USD 213. The GRE exam fee in Indian rupees is approximately 16,096 INR. The fee for GRE in various other countries is — Australia – USD 230, Turkey – USD 255, China – USD 231, and Nigeria – USD 226. While the GRE general test fee varies based on your location, the GRE subject test fee is consistent all over the world. The exam fee for the GRE subject test is USD 150, which is approximately 11200 INR.

In addition to the GRE registration fee, you may have to pay extra for any additional services that you might opt for such as rescheduling fee, additional score reports fee, etc., among others. Let’s take a look at those.

GRE Special Handling Charges

Sometimes, due to some unforeseen circumstances, you might not be able to appear for the GRE exam. In such situations, you can reschedule the exam for some extra cost. While the GRE fees in INR is 16,096, the ETS charges an additional amount of $53.90, which is approximately 4036.79 INR, to reschedule and select a new date for the examination. You can reschedule the exam either by visiting the official ETS website or by connecting with a representative of the Regional Registration Centre over the phone. More so, if you want to request a change in the test center, you need to pay an additional amount of USD 50.

Mode of Payment

The ETS does not accept payments in cash. However, you can pay your GRE test fee 2021 through any of the following modes of payment.

  • Paypal 
  • Money Order/Certified Check/Voucher
  • Credit cards or debit cards (American Express, MasterCard, Rupay Global, UnionPay and Visa etc)
  • E-cheque service (only drawn against U.S. bank accounts)
GRE Refund Policy

If you want to cancel the exam, the maximum refund that you will receive is 50% of the total cost of the GRE exam. As you might be aware, the GRE exam fee in India is $213 or 16,096 INR. And if you wish to cancel the examination, you will receive $106 or approximately 8,048 INR. However, to receive the refund, you have to cancel your registration no later than at least four days before the examination. The refund amount will be credited to your bank account, from which you’ve paid the exam fee.  In the event you cancel within four days of the exam date, then your total exam fee will be forfeited.
