The GRE’s test-friendly nature lets you navigate through the sections easily by allowing you to skip questions within a section or by going back to a previous question or section whenever necessary. Another striking feature of the GRE is that it is a section-adaptive test. This means that the difficulty level of the second part of a section ( for eg: the Verbal section) is altered based on your performance in the first part of the section. However, not all GRE sections are section-adaptive in nature. While the GRE Verbal and Quant sections are section-adaptive, the GRE Analytical Writing Assessment is not.

GRE Sections

Analytical Writing — The GRE Analytical Writing section tests your ability to articulate ideas in an effective and logical manner. It also requires you to make claims and support them with evidence. This section expects you to draft a coherent and logical essay while analysing and critiquing an issue or argument in standard written English. The AWA section consists of two question types that you have to complete within 30 minutes.

  • Analyse an Issue
  • Analyse an Argument

Verbal Reasoning — The GRE Verbal Reasoning tests your ability to draw inferences from a passage, summarise information given in the passage, identify the central theme of the passage. It also tests your ability to understand the meaning of words, concepts, and analyse the relationship between the two. The verbal skills you might possess are tested through three different question types:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Text Completion
  • Sentence Equivalence

Quantitative Reasoning — The GRE Quantitative Reasoning tests your ability to apply basic knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry to solve quantitative problems. It also tests your ability to analyse and understand data provided to you. These quantitative skills are tested through four question types:

  • Numeric Entry questions
  • Multiple-Choice Questions – Select One Answer Choice
  • Multiple-Choice Questions – Select One or More Answer Choice
  • Quantitative Comparison Questions
