Founded in 1850, the University of Rochester (UR) is a private research university located in Rochester, New York. Its roots can be traced back to the First Baptist Church of Hamilton (New York), which was founded in 1796. This congregation formed the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York, which was eventually renamed the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution in 1817, and in time gave rise to the University of Rochester.
