The State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, also known as Binghamton University-SUNY, is a top-tier public university in New York state. The State University of New York at Binghamton was the official name of the campus until 1992. However, Binghamton University was later chosen as the official name of the institution.

Initially, Binghamton University was established in 1946 as the Triple Cities College to meet the educational requirements of veterans of  World War II. However, after four years,  in order to honour Robert Harpur, a revolutionary war veteran, the college was integrated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and was renamed Harpur College.

The campus relocated to Vestal across the Susquehanna River, the longest river on the East Coast of the US, in 1961. Shortly after this move, Harpur College was chosen as one of the four University Centres in the SUNY system (a system of public colleges and universities in the State of New York). The SUNY system is permitted to confer doctorates owing to its high enrollment rate and its reputation for academic excellence.

Binghamton University is famous for its programs in Accounting, Nursing, and Chemistry. According to Niche website, these programs are among the best 100 in the nation. Also, it’s ranking among national universities in US News and World Report 2022’s list of ‘Best Colleges’ was 83.

Binghamton University’s 930-acre campus, which is located in the suburbs of Binghamton, was home to 14,333 undergraduate enrollees in the fall of 2020. It also housed over 1,800 foreign students who represented 98 countries. Importantly, Binghamton University—SUNY has a student-to-faculty ratio of 19:1. Hence, 45.7% of the classes at the school have fewer than 20 students. The university’s academic calendar is built on a semester system.
