What Different Options Do You Have After Taking the GMAT Exam?


The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or more commonly referred to as GATE is an exam held by the Indian Institutes of Technology that is attempted by students to gain admissions into Masters programs and for securing jobs in the public sector companies. The GATE aims at understanding your knowledge of various subjects in engineering and science. It has an annual number of approximately 7 lakh student test-takers. The test scores are valid for a period of 3 years.

There are several coaching institutes for GATE that can help you achieve your dream score, but what different option do you have after taking the GATE exam and getting your results? There are three options that you can choose from after taking the GATE exam. Firstly, Masters in India, next you can choose to do your Masters abroad and lastly, you can look for job opportunities in public sector companies or public sector undertakings.

In India, there are several universities that you can get into with your GATE scores. All of these universities have different cut-off score criteria for admissions. The following table is a quick summary of the requirements.

Studying Abroad with GATE scores is another useful choice as universities like the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and the Technical University of Germany accept students on this basis but require at least a 90th percentile.

The last option, and the one that attracts most applicants are job opportunities in public sector companies. Several PSUs like BHEL, GAIL, DRDO, ONGC and NPCIL hire B.Tech Engineering students into specific roles based largely on GATE scores. Since it’s a government job, it offers a lot of job safety and several other formal sector employment advantages. Further, it also pays well, approximately between 7-10 lakhs, and hence attracts a lot of students.
