Master in Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering or M.E,  is one of the most demanding and challenging branches of the engineering course. It deals with the creation and development of the mechanical systems required to run every kind of machine.  The course concentrates on the knowledge of design, production and operations of machines and their parts.  M.E deals with the creation of a fan to a jet plane, from a needle to automotive engines and spare parts.

M.E uses objectives of material theory and physics and combines knowledge of mathematics, technology, business, and management. Important sub-disciplines of mechanical engineering are Mechanics, Mechatronics, and Thermodynamics.

Masters in Mechanical Engineering deals with the most profound knowledge about machine designing, producing and operating. It caters to two program choices to the graduates:

(i) Thesis Program: Generally, this program is preferred by the students who want to learn detailed aspects of a particular field in mechanical engineering. This is a research-based study course which one has to complete usually for  3-9 credit hours. A professor is usually assigned to the students. Under their guidance, the students do the research work.  While pursuing the research study, the students can work as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or a Research Assistant (RA). After masters, he/she can have the option to go for a Ph.D. or any other doctoral program or simply get a job.

(ii) Non-Thesis Program: It is the more preferred program of the two by the aspirants. In this program, the student usually opts for courses only or upto 3 credits of research work. After completing the course, one can directly get hired into a mechanical or a related industry. But it makes it a little difficult for aspirants who want to study further or want to pursue a doctoral or Ph.D. program, though not impossible. This program gives an opportunity to students to specialize in one or more areas of mechanical engineering by opting for more courses in this area. Some of the common specializations are as follows:

  • Control Systems, M.Sc.
  • Fluid and Thermal Sciences, M.Sc.
  • Manufacturing Technology, M.Sc
  • Electro-Mechanical Systems Design, M.Sc.
  • Automotive Engineering, M.Sc
  • Combustion Engineering, M.Sc.
  • Mechanical Design, M.Sc.
  • Mechanical and Medical Engineering, M.Sc
  • Computational Mechanics, Master
  • Mechatronic Engineering, M.Eng.

How to get in Masters in M.E?

To get into a master’s program you have to qualify Graduate Record Examination (GRE). It is a gateway to all the master degree programs at postgraduate and doctoral levels.  It is a test conducted and regulated by ETS. The test is conducted all year round. Hence, there is no hustle-bustle for meeting a deadlines criterion. There is no prerequisite for GRE but to procure Master’s in M.E one has to have a bachelor’s degree in M.E.
