The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)is a gateway for pursuing higher education abroad. From specialized Masters to PhD programs, grad schools worldwide set GRE score as a pre-requisite for admission process. Certain universities, however, offer select programs without a GRE score. It’s only wise to consult the grad school regarding the same to check if you really need to give the GRE. That said, the next thing you would want to know is the eligibility. As a matter of fact, you neither need any academic eligibility nor there is an age limit. Nonetheless, one has to posses an undergrad degree from a recognized university, a GRE score and letters of recommendation to seek admission into a grad school. Also,various universities that accept GRE scores lay down their own criteria for admission such as minimum work experience.

What’s in the GRE?

The GRE is a computer-based test that has been designed to evaluate the verbal, analytical and mathematical skills of the test-takers. The GRE also has subject testslike Chemistry, Literature, Mathematics, Psychology , etc. These subject tests help to make your application stand out from the rest by highlighting your skill-level or expertise in a particular subject. The syllabus differs for both the GRE general test and the GRE subject test, though the eligibility criteria for both the formats are same.

How to register for the GRE?

Apparently, as a test-taker,you need to create a GRE account on www.ets.org/gre to book a test date.Yes, the registration process is completely online and requires you make an online payment of $195.In case you want to reschedule the time, date or location of your test, you have to pay a rescheduling fee of $50.

Identity proof accepted at test-center?

In India, the only identification-proof accepted at a GRE test center is a valid passport.The name in the passport MUST exactly match with the name you mentioned in the online registration form. You will be asked to show the GRE admission ticket too, which you will receive after the registration process.

What if you need to reschedule the exam or cancel the registration??

All your rescheduling and canceling FAQs have been answered below-

  • If you cancel your registration four days prior to your test date, you will receive a refund equivalent to half of the original test fee.
  • The GRE can be taken not more than five times withinany continuous period of 12 months.
  • To re-take the exam, the wait time is at least 21 days starting from your previous date of exam.
  • You can make the online payment via American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or VISA.

After you finish giving the test, you could either report or cancel your score.Using ‘ScoreSelect’, you can choose the score(s) you want to send to institutions. Your scores can be sent to up to four graduate institutions at zero cost. For sending to more institutions, you can use Additional Score Reports (ASRs) at $27 for each score.Whatever the score, its validity is not more than five years fromthe year in which you appeared for the test.
