Why GMAT Exam to Pursue MBA?

Why GMAT Exam to Pursue MBA?

Are you planning on pursuing an MBA? Confused if the GMAT is the right choice for you or not? Do not fret, we will help you understand how and why the GMAT is a perfect fit if you are pursuing an MBA program.

A common dilemma among MBA aspirants is which exam they should take —  the CAT or the GMAT. Both exams test your analytical writing, logical reasoning, critical thinking and problem solving skills, however, the CAT is a national level exam, while the GMAT is a global exam. In this article, however, we are going to talk about whether the GMAT exam is the apt choice for an MBA.

Here are ten reasons why you must opt for the GMAT exam to pursue an MBA degree.

University Options

The GMAT score is accepted in 1700 universities, 3000+ colleges for over 6000+ programs. Appearing for the GMAT gives you the liberty to choose amongst various universities that offer various programs. In addition, the GMAT is a globally recognised exam, unlike the CAT that is only recognised in India. Hence, you have numerous options.

Score Validity

The GMAT score is valid for five years. This gives you a lot of flexibility. You can attempt the exam immediately after your graduation and then proceed to either gain a few years of work experience, or spend time on building your profile. When you feel you are ready, you can then begin your application process at the university of your choice.

Probability of Getting Selected

The GMAT score is one of the many requirements set by the business schools. With a phenomenal profile, you can get into a good business school with a relatively low score, and if you have a moderate profile, you can compensate for the lag with a good GMAT score. The university admissions committee will have a closer look at your profile as they generally do not prefer individuals with only academic intelligence. They will require candidates who can bring to their university a lot of diversity and competencies. This is where a well-written SOP, influential LOR’s, and any internships completed come into play. All of the above could influence your admissions into a university.

Exam Retakes

Unlike most entrance exams that can only be taken once a year, the GMAT can be taken five times in a year.  Hence, you do not have to wait for a whole year to retake the exam. This way you don’t lose out on a year. However, it is important to note that once you have written the GMAT, the retake can be taken only after a gap of 16 days.

Less Competition

Over the past five years, both the CAT and GMAT exams have shown a consistent rise in the number of applicants. However, the number of test-takers for CAT is almost three times more when compared to the number of test-takers for GMAT. Every year over 1.8  to 2 lakh students appear for the CAT exam competing for 10,000 to 20,000 seats at every top management college across the country. As you can see from the given figures, the odds of an individual gaining a seat through the CAT exam is very slim as the competition is high. This is however not the case when it comes to GMAT.

Settle Abroad

The GMAT is a gateway to settling abroad. This is your chance to get international exposure, expand your career opportunities and secure a stable salary. Prominent and reputed companies overseas hiring candidates often look to provide jobs to well-deserving candidates. The GMAT score adds a lot of value to this process of securing a job. In addition to the offers being lucrative, you are bound to have a progressive professional life.

Preparation Process

The GMAT test preparation takes around 3 to 4 months even if you begin right from the scratch. On average, premium exams like CAT or XAT take a minimum of 6 months. Since most of the topics from the GMAT exam are based on fundamental concepts that you have been taught in high school, the GMAT becomes relatively easier to prepare for.

Working Professionals

It’s never too late to think about MBA even if you are a professional with 15+ years. You are eligible to appear for GMAT as most of the top B-schools in the USA and Europe prefer a well-experienced candidate. This is due to the fact that they believe that such candidates possess more competency and maturity as compared to freshers.

Flexible Application Deadlines

Business schools have varying deadlines for applications. In case you are busy when one application cycle is about to end, you have the liberty to apply again soon enough. Hence, you needn’t worry if you have missed a deadline.

Non-Mathematics Student

The GMAT quantitative section is relatively easier than most aptitude exams. So if you are someone from a non-mathematics background, you can easily opt for this exam. This section mostly focuses on the fundamental concepts such as –  algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and number systems. For this exam, you just need to brush up on these fundamental concepts in order to ace the GMAT quantitative section.

We have provided you with ten reasons as to why the GMAT is an apt choice for an MBA amongst the other aptitude exams. However, you are to do your research and use your own discretion to decide which exam is the best fit for you. We hope to have made this decision-making process a bit simpler for you.

All the Best!
