What is GMAT?


About the GMAT:

The GMAT is an internationally recognized exam for management aspirants to secure admission in graduate management programs in top tier B-schools across the globe. It is a computer adaptive standardized test which consists of multiple choice questions in its exam pattern and evaluates an applicant’s quantitative, integrated reasoning, reading and analytical writing skills in the English language.

Before we explore its core concept, it is important to know the GMAT full form. GMAT stands for Graduate Management Aptitude Test which is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Applicants can take the exam up to 8 times in total. The GMAT score is commonly accepted by more than 7,000 programs at approximately 2,300 graduate business schools around the world.

Why take the GMAT Exam?

As a management aspirant, if you wish to pursue an executive management program from a reputed B-school or university, then GMAT is the gateway to getting admission to a college of your interest. For instance, Harvard Business School Class of 2021 had invited Round 1 Application Deadline on September 5, 2018, and Round 2 Application Deadline on January 4, 2019. Any applications sent beyond these dates will no longer be considered.

When is the GMAT offered?

The GMAT exam is offered multiple times in a year at Pearson VUE centers. You can obtain a complete list of seat availability and testing centres on the GMAT official website. The GMAT entrance test can be taken up by candidates up to 8 times in total. As a GMAT 2020 applicant, you should remember that you can take the entrance test only up to 5 times in a 12-month calendar year which must have a time gap of at least 16 days from each attempt.

Prospective MBA aspirants can register for the GMAT online. Once registered, they should devote at least 3-4 months to studying for the GMAT exam. GMAT Syllabus 2020:

Applicants who are taking the GMAT 2020 exam need to kick start their preparation as per the GMAT Syllabus 2020. The syllabus is divided into four different sections:

Quantitative Aptitude: This section includes quantitative reasoning knowledge like data sufficiency and problem-solving.
Integrated Reasoning: In this section, candidates study data interpretation techniques to solve complicated problems through graphs, charts, table analysis, etc.
Verbal Ability: This section comprises of vocabulary and adopting of some corrective measures to articulate ideas adequately in standard written English.
Analytical Writing Assessment: In this section, the writing style of students is tested through an essay or comprehension passage.

What is GMAT Score?

The GMAT score is usually valid for up to five years. The total GMAT score is measured on a scale from 200-800. In the table given below, we have enlisted the scaled scores in five different components that the GMAT candidates usually receive:

  2. Quantitative Reasoning Score (0 to 60), with percentile
  3. Verbal Ability Score (0 to 60), with percentile

Cost of GMAT Exam:

The cost to take the GMAT exam is US$250. This includes sending your score reports to five different business schools of your choice. The GMAT cost in India roughly converts to Rs. 18,000(approx.), subject to existing exchange rates.
