It was founded in 1883 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand and became an independent university in 1963. The institution has been ranked as one of the top 50 universities globally for its research output and is home to some of the best faculties and departments in New Zealand. 

The university has produced several world-renowned leaders and innovators across multiple fields. Some of its notable alumni include Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to summit Mount Everest; Lucy Lawless, an actress known for her role on Xena: Warrior Princess; Jemaine Clement, a member of the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords; Neil Finn, lead singer, and songwriter for Crowded House; and Taika Waititi, a filmmaker whose filmography includes critical and commercial successes such as  Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit.

For domestic students, the fees begin from $NZD 10,000 per year. A range of scholarships is available to these students which helps reduce the cost further. These include the Auckland Uni Scholarship (which covers up to 100% of tuition fees), the Chancellor’s Scholarship (for high-achieving students), and the Pacific Islander Scholarship (for Pasifika students).

International students can also take advantage of scholarship options provided by the university. Fees for overseas students begin from $NZD 27,000 per year. However, the institution offers a range of scholarships that can cover up to 100% of tuition costs. These include the International Student Excellence Award and the New Zealand Merit Award.

Careers and Placements 

The University of Auckland is a great place to study and build your career. It has an excellent graduate employability rate, as students find jobs in their chosen field soon after graduation.

Several opportunities are made available to students to help them gain work experience and placement while pursuing their chosen courses. The Career Development Centre (CDC) at the university assists students in their job search, and conducts interview training and resume writing workshops. They also organise employer visits, industry events, and career fairs.

The CDC helps students connect with employers looking for interns or graduates for full-time positions. There are also several scholarships available that can help you finance your studies while working part-time or completing an internship.

Admission Requirements


To gain admission into the University of Auckland, international students must have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution. Additionally, your grades must meet or exceed the university’s minimum academic requirements.   • Standardised Test Scores: You may also be required to provide scores of standardised tests such as GRE or GMAT. Therefore, prepare in advance for these exams in order to score well. 
  • Test of Academic Ability: For admission to specific courses, you may also be required to complete an academic ability test. Thus, prospective students are advised to be thorough with their course requirements and prepare ahead of time to pass these tests.
