Carnegie Mellon University, formerly known as Carnegie Technical School, was founded by Andrew Mellon in 1900. However, in 1912, it came to be known as the Carnegie Institute of Technology because of a merger between the Carnegie Institute of Technology and Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. This institute provides graduate-level education and is also highly recognized for its research activities due to which it is ranked 53rd in the QS Ranking.

The university is also proud of its exceptional alumni — over 20 Nobel Prize Laureates, 39 members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 26 members of the American Academy of Science and Arts. Besides, it also boasts of its 52 Tony Awards Winners, 13 Turing Award Winners, and 142 Emmy Award Winners.

The university consists of seven independent schools — School of Computer Science, Tepper School of Business, Mellon College of Science, College of Fine Arts, College of Engineering, College of Information and Public Policy, and Dietrich College of Humanities, and Social Sciences. It is home to over 15,000 students, out of which 8,000 students are international students from across 117 countries.

Despite such a large student population, Carnegie Mellon is known as “most selective” by the U.S. News and World Report. Carnegie Mellon’s acceptance rate is a mere 13%, making it a rather difficult university to get into. In 2021, the university had over 32,000 applicants, out of which only about 4,000 were accepted and only 1,600 enrolled. Having said that, the acceptance rate for  individual schools varies. Hence, it is advisable to do a quick research into the program you plan on applying to at Carnegie Mellon.
