The State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, also known as Binghamton University-SUNY, is a top-tier public university in New York state. The State University of New York at Binghamton was the official name of the campus until 1992. However, Binghamton University was later chosen as the official name of the institution. 

Initially, Binghamton University was established in 1946 as the Triple Cities College to meet the educational requirements of veterans of  World War II. However, after four years,  in order to honour Robert Harpur, a revolutionary war veteran, the college was integrated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and was renamed Harpur College.

The campus relocated to Vestal across the Susquehanna River, the longest river on the East Coast of the US, in 1961. Shortly after this move, Harpur College was chosen as one of the four University Centres in the SUNY system (a system of public colleges and universities in the State of New York). The SUNY system is permitted to confer doctorates owing to its high enrollment rate and its reputation for academic excellence. 

Binghamton University is famous for its programs in Accounting, Nursing, and Chemistry. According to Niche website, these programs are among the best 100 in the nation. Also, it’s ranking among national universities in US News and World Report 2022’s list of ‘Best Colleges’ was 83. 

Academics 

Binghamton University’s 930-acre campus, which is located in the suburbs of Binghamton, was home to 14,333 undergraduate enrollees in the fall of 2020. It also housed over 1,800 foreign students who represented 98 countries. Importantly, Binghamton University—SUNY has a student-to-faculty ratio of 19:1. Hence, 45.7% of the classes at the school have fewer than 20 students. The university’s academic calendar is built on a semester system.

There are three types of applications that students can utilise to apply to Binghamton University—SUNY.  They are as follows:

Common Application

Students can use The Common Application or  ‘Common App’ portal to apply to several of Binghamton University’s participating schools with a single application.  ‘Common App’ is a central platform utilised by several institutions in the US for admissions. Students can choose and apply to any of the over 900 participating colleges and universities across the US.

SUNY Application

Here, students can apply to several SUNY schools through the applySUNY portal. The platform caters to aspirants applying to SUNY’s institutions specifically.

Coalition Application

More than 90 institutions accept the Coalition Application. Through the Coalition for College portal, you can submit applications to over  90 schools using an online toolkit. 

Note: The application fee is $50 USD. There are no fee waivers available for international students.

Scholarships

Binghamton University attracts meritorious students from across the world. Hence, the selection process for scholarships is highly competitive. The President’s Scholarship, Provost’s Scholarship, and Dean’s Scholarship are three scholarships awarded to domestic and international students based on academic merit. It is important to note that there is no fixed application process for the scholarship. In order to remain eligible, you must enrol full-time and maintain a minimal GPA.
